When it comes to external tiles, quality and who installs them matter. External tiles are out in the elements and are more prone to dust, debris, and damage. It is also essential to understand the substrate, whether it is a wall or floor, because every surface, tile, stone, or paver requires the correct preparation and products. An experienced installer must have a deep understanding of the project and use suitable materials to ensure long-term performance and durability.
At Unique Tiling Concepts, our approach is to ensure each tile and material is prepared correctly before installation. And with the experience that we have, you can expect a perfect, durable finish on time and within budget, whether it’s the floor or the wall.
Our tiling expertise includes:
Our success in large-scale, luxury external tiling comes down to accuracy in measurement and mapping. Often, we take a whole day to get the mapping right, which includes checking the substrate level.
Once we are confident with our measurements and mapping, we start by applying primer and installing the tiles, doing a progress check every hour. With the help of a laser and our most skilled tiler in charge, we ensure that your tiles are installed as planned.
Tiling an external area starts with the right tools, skills, and technology. At Unique Tiling Concepts, we ensure that our teams consistently communicate with each other to keep things smooth and precise.

Our team has recently done an external tiling project on a large-scale, high-end home. The project involved extensive work with bluestone - a material that needs precision and care.
From day one, we maintained close communication with the builder, architect, and our own team to ensure every stage ran smoothly and met our exacting quality standards. Given the complexity and size of the project, we began by holding strategy meetings with key team members to plan the best approach, discussing materials, tools, and weekly targets with our suppliers.
Working alongside other trades, our tilers coordinated each section meticulously to connect each external tile like a puzzle. The result was a flawless finish that both the builder and homeowner were delighted with. We’re proud to have delivered another project that reflects the precision and professionalism of Unique Tiling Concepts.
We deliver quality and timely results, no matter the project type. See our projects and solutions for different clients.
We follow all the official Victorian standards, such as the AS 3958.1 (2007) for tile installation and expansion joints, AS 3958.2 for choosing the right tiles and adhesives, and AS ISO 13007 for grout standards. We also follow the National Construction Code (NCC) and slip-resistance guidelines so that your outdoor areas are safe and long-lasting.
Safety always comes first for us. Before we start any external tiling, we make sure every work area is secure, especially on scaffolds or higher surfaces. We take the time to set things up properly so our team can focus on quality work without any risks.
We only use high-quality materials and adhesives from trusted brands such as Mapei, Sika, Laticrete, and Ardex. All of our products are non-slump and frost-resistant, so that they stay stable and durable in all weather conditions.
For external waterproofing, we use Mapelastic Smart Membrane, specially designed for outdoor environments. For grout, we recommend Mapei Ultracolor for its excellent value and reliability or Mapei Kerapoxy Easy Design for premium protection.
It’s non-absorbent, anti-bacterial, and mould-resistant, perfect for high-traffic or exposed areas. We also suggest porcelain tiles over ceramic for external use because they absorb less water and resist the elements better. Bigger, thicker tiles and UV-resistant options are also safer, more durable, and maintain their look longer.
Getting the surface right is the key to long-lasting tiles. We take care of details such as screeding, waterproofing, and applying the right primer so the tiles bond properly and stay put for years. We always ensure that external areas have the correct slope and drainage, allowing water to flow away easily.
We use a wide range of professional tools:
And of course, if a job needs a specific tool we don’t have, we can source it quickly from our network of suppliers.
We install expansion (movement) joints every 4 metres to let the tiled surface expand and contract naturally with temperature changes. It’s a small but very important step that prevents cracking and keeps your tiles looking great for a long time.
Outdoor tiling faces more challenges than indoor tiling, so we usually recommend:
Definitely! We don’t just install tiles, we also provide aftercare services to keep your tiling looking its best:
